Why every Health and Wellness Coach should up-skill in Menopause!

Menopause is a natural phase in every woman’s life that brings significant changes to her body and overall well-being. Research shows that approximately 75% of women will experience some menopause symptoms and 25% will experience serious symptoms. Research by Harvard and the NHS shows, however, that most women are reluctant or even afraid to talk about menopause and this conversation still remains largely taboo. Health and Wellness Coaches can change this by recognizing the impact of menopause and up-skilling.

As the population ages, there is an increasing demand for health coaches with expertise in menopause since women often seek personalized support to manage their symptoms and maintain overall well-being during this significant life transition. The trend for women – the fastest-growing sector of the workforce – is to continue working later in life. Menopause occurs at an average age of 51 which often correlates with a critical career stage when women are more likely to occupy stressful senior positions along with other major life stressors such as aging relatives and/or children leaving home.

Health and Wellness Coaches

« Health and Wellness Coaches work collaboratively with individuals and groups in a client-led process that supports the client in working toward self-determined health and wellness goals. Coaches support clients in using their self-awareness, insights, and personal strengths to develop management strategies for lasting behavior change. Coaches hold an unconditional positive regard as they empower the client to achieve their goals, using a process of discovery. Coaches support and encourage clients to become masters of their own health, wellness, and overall well-being (Global Wellness Institute Global Coaching Initiative, 2021).

Here’s why every Health Coach should up-skill in Menopause!

  • By up-skilling in menopause, coaches gain in-depth knowledge about the physiological, psychological, and emotional changes that women experience during this phase. This expertise will enable them to better understand client’s specific needs and challenges, to provide tailored guidance and support.
  • Menopause can be a challenging time for women, both physically and emotionally. By up-skilling in menopause, coaches will develop a deeper sense of empathy and understanding toward their clients who are going through this transition.
  • Menopause brings various symptoms such as hot flashes, mood swings, sleep disturbances, and weight gain. By up-skilling in menopause, coaches will be equipped with strategies and techniques to help their clients effectively manage these symptoms through lifestyle modifications, nutrition, physical activity, sleep, and stress management.
  • Menopause is associated with hormonal changes, including a decline in estrogen levels. By up-skilling in menopause, coaches will learn about the impact of hormonal imbalances on a woman’s health and how to address them through proper nutrition and lifestyle.
  • Menopause affects each woman differently, and there is no one-size-fits-all approach to managing its effects. Health coaches with specialized training in menopause can offer personalized support, taking into account a woman’s unique medical history, lifestyle, and preferences while considering not only physical symptoms but also emotional, mental, and social well-being.

As a Health and Wellness Coach, your own personal and professional growth should be a top priority. By up-skilling in menopause, you are investing in your own development and expanding your knowledge base. This not only enhances your credibility as a coach but also allows you to stay updated on the latest research, trends, and interventions related to menopause. Continuous learning is the key to staying relevant in the ever-evolving field of health and wellness coaching.

Up-skilling in menopause is essential for every Health and Wellness Coach. By deepening your understanding of menopause and its impact on women’s lives, you can offer specialized support and guidance that is tailored to your client’s unique needs. Embracing menopause as an opportunity for growth, you can help your clients navigate this transformative phase with confidence, resilience, and optimal well-being This is especially relevant for workplace well-being which will be addressed in the second blog post of this series “Why every Health and Wellness Coach should up-skill in Workplace Well-being!”
