Thriving Through the Seasons: Coaching for Aging & Well-being

Did You Know? As the global population ages, the diversity of health and wellness needs continues to expand. Menopause, men’s health, aging, and cognitive wellness all intersect with Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) by highlighting unique health challenges that specific demographics face. In light of this, several international awareness days in autumn provide opportunities for Health and Wellness Coaches to educate, support, and empower individuals and organizations, while also ensuring equitable access to wellness resources and care.

1. World Menopause Day (October 18)

Menopause is not just a biological transition but a gender and age-related issue that impacts women in the workplace and at home. The DEI aspect emphasizes the need for organizations to create menopause-friendly policies, ensuring that women of all backgrounds receive the support they need. Health and Wellness Coaches can guide women in navigating the physical and emotional challenges of menopause through personalized approaches in nutrition, exercise, and mindfulness. Coaches can also work with businesses to foster inclusive environments where women’s health is recognized and accommodated.

2. Movember (Throughout November)

Movember highlights men’s health issues, which often go under-discussed, especially among marginalized communities. Health and Wellness Coaches can help men, including those from underrepresented groups, understand the importance of regular health checks and preventative care, creating space for vulnerable conversations around mental health. Coaches can also collaborate with DEI teams within organizations to promote health equity and create programs that address men’s health in a way that respects different cultural norms and stigmas around seeking care.

3. International Day of Older Persons (October 1)

Aging intersects with ageism and often other forms of discrimination, such as those based on race, gender, or disability. Health and Wellness Coaches can help older adults, particularly those from marginalized groups, maintain physical independence, social inclusion, and emotional well-being, which are crucial for healthy aging. Supporting older employees or clients through DEI frameworks can help ensure that programs are designed with sensitivity to different cultural perspectives on aging and care.

4. World Alzheimer’s Month (September)

Alzheimer’s disease disproportionately affects older adults, with minority populations often facing barriers to early diagnosis and care. Health and Wellness Coaches can raise awareness about brain health, particularly among diverse communities, where access to information and healthcare may be limited. Coaches can also work with caregivers, helping them manage the emotional and physical challenges they face, and advocate for equitable care for patients from all backgrounds.
